Introduction

Since the release of the first ChatGPT model in November 2022, competition among AI giants has grown steeper than ever. Beyond OpenAI, the market has evolved into not just newer models, but also tiers with different features to suit all usage levels. However, as active users of these models, one question remains: Should we go for the paid version or stay on the free one? Plus, is there any difference in data privacy for users?

The AI Takeover

According to the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) department at Stanford University, generative AI has reached a 53% adoption rate within 3 years, reaching mass adoption faster than personal computers or the internet. Among organisations and universities, such adoption has also hit close to 90%, meaning almost everyone is already using AI in everyday workflows.

Looking at the statistics and how fast AI has taken over the market, it proves that AI models are becoming inseparable in daily life, no matter the usage frequency. The only focus now is how we can identify which versions are suitable for what we do every day and whether the paid versions are truly better than the free ones.

Which Version is The “Right” Version?

Among all models, this article focuses on the 3 biggest AI options in the market now: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google) and Claude (Anthropic). Before exploring how each AI model works differently in tiers and prices, here is an overview of each model’s unique features and specialisation.

Claude is ideal for individuals who frequently create long-form writing and editing processes, especially when context is needed. This is because Claude updates its system cards annually, making it accessible for users to understand how Claude's behaviour and intention work together when delivering responses. Therefore, Claude wins for the highest overall output quality across long-form tasks.

When it comes to Gemini, AI users will instantly think Google, and that is the sole advantage of using it. As one of the earliest online search engines, Google’s Gemini is ideal for real-time, up-to-date information as responses are grounded in Google Search. With a built-in Google ecosystem, Gemini also connects to Gmail and Google Docs as a side panel, so you can still use Gemini without switching apps.

For ChatGPT, it is the superior choice for creative tasks such as image generation and voice conversations. Driven by DALL-E (text-to-image feature), ChatGPT allows users to generate ideas from scratch without needing complex and technical prompts to start. At the same time, it is also the most widely used AI tool. What more can you ask for?

So no matter which model is chosen, it all boils down to these 3 things before making a decision:

  1. The features available (e.g. whether it has functionality).

  2. Hidden costs (e.g. data privacy, reliability of information).

  3. When is the right time to choose the paid version?

To answer this, below is a complete breakdown of each AI model and how you can identify the right time to upgrade.

Imagine different versions of AI models as the vehicle that drives you to reach your daily tasks; all of them can reach the intended destination, but the routes to reach it are completely different. For instance, Claude Sonnet acts as a functional car with basic features to help you complete simple tasks like drafting texts, generating general ideas or checking grammar. Claude Haiku and Opus offer a high-spec car with a bigger fuel tank (usage credit), a stronger engine (top model with fast processing speed) and a bigger boot (how much text it holds at once). One thing to keep in mind: no matter the features, neither makes you a better driver by simply paying more.

Gemini: Built Into Google Apps

Google AI Plus

Google AI Pro

Google AI Ultra

Key Features

Access to Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, deep research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems

Everything in Free and: Access to the Flash Model + 2x higher usage limits with video generation and daily brief.

Everything in Plus and:

Access to Gemini 4 Argon, Pro Model, Flash Model + 4x higher usage limits for video generation and daily brief.

Everything in Pro and:

Highest access to Gemini 4 Argon, the Pro Model, and the Flash Model, plus 20x higher usage limits than the Pro plan.

Table 2: Gemini Tiers & Prices.

The main difference between Gemini tiers is usage limits plus additional features specifically for video generation and briefs. As Gemini is built on fast replies and rapid thinking using Google’s ecosystem (e.g. Google search engine and YouTube), it is a solid choice for basic research. Interestingly, among all the free versions, Google Gemini offered the most features. This includes Gemini Live (e.g. voice-based conversations), Canvas (e.g. interactive workspace next to projects) and Gems (e.g. custom instructions and prompts).

Paid versions, especially with Pro and Ultra, offer a unique feature: Gemini 4 Argon. With it, users can tune reasoning on different thinking levels, complete specialised tasks such as software engineering, and set honesty boundaries when it lacks information. For heavy Google ecosystem users who demand advanced thought processes from AI, paid versions may offer greater returns with less hallucination and perks like Google storage and YouTube Premium as a bundle.

Table 3: ChatGPT Tiers & Prices.

Across the three companies, OpenAI offers the most models and the most differentiated tiers, with distinct benefits. Back to the vehicle example, think of these 4 tiers as 4 types of vehicles. Free is like a bicycle suitable for short-distance tasks (e.g. email drafts, creating recipes or basic questions). When the tasks require heavier boxes (larger files), then it is probably time for a family car (Go tier).

Go tier costs a little gas money (RM24/month), but enables longer distances (more usage limits), ranging from standard tasks like writing to complex tasks like assisting a project. However, if your destination is another country (e.g. complex programmes), then it is time to consider an aeroplane (Plus tier). Plus tier gives you more helpful controls (custom GPTs and deep reasoning models) when travelling across countries (writing code and analysing heavy spreadsheets).

Now, when your destination is Mars (running a business or conducting scientific research), you need a rocketship (Pro tier). This vehicle is extremely expensive to run, but it gives you OpenAI's biggest and fastest engines (Ultrafast mode), with almost no limits on fuel usage (unlimited usage limits).

Deciding On Which Is The “Best” For You

Overall, the free and paid versions come down to two things: the model processing speed and usage limits, as it directly impacts output quality and the time needed to complete the same tasks. Therefore, we can adopt this rule when trying new AI tools: the 2-week test. Use the free version for 2 weeks, and whenever the usage limit is reached, record the task and minutes lost. Using this note, apply this calculation and upgrade if:

Hours Saved Per Month x Value of 1 Hour > Monthly Subscription Cost

As an example, if considering whether to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus (RM99.90/ month):

Hours Saved Per Month: 10 Hours
Value Per Hour: RM30.

10 hours x RM30 = RM300 > ChatGPT Plus Price (RM99.90/month)

In this case, the value of upgrading outweighs the monthly subscription cost, making it a worthwhile investment in the long run. On a broader scale, here are 5 key self-assessment questions before making the payment:

  1. Did you hit the free limit at least 3 times a week for 2 weeks? This gives a good rule of thumb to determine the free version’s limitations.

  2. Which tasks were you doing when the free limit was reached? If the free version can handle the same task, the problem is volume, not the plan.

  3. Can you explain the last AI answer you used, in your own words, without referring to the chat? If not, more usage does not solve the problem.

  4. On your last important task, did you come up with your view before asking AI? This gives clarity on the problem of relying on AI for answers.

  5. Are you paying for two AI tools for the same job? If yes, then you might be spending more than the value received.

When buying paid AI plans for a team, do consider team plans over personal ones such as Claude Team ($25 or $125 per seat), ChatGPT Business ($25 monthly or $20 monthly when paid lump sum) or Gemini inside Google Workspace as a cost-efficient option. Regarding company data privacy, check whether each plan uses chats to train models and do not write this from memory, as the terms of service for paid plans evolve constantly.

Finally, purchasing a license for AI usage does not equal adoption. Humans are creatures of habit, and if employees cannot see the benefits of using AI to complete tasks, a fear of failure or data leakage will stop them from experimenting with AI tools. Therefore, employees need to know which tier fits their task complexity and how to maintain personal judgement when incorporating AI in task completion.
